Meet Your Egg Layers

We think it is important to know where your food comes from. In an effort to allow our customers to connect with their food, every month we will be featuring one of our hens for you to meet. We hope by allowing you, and your family, to get to know our animals, it will help spark interest and appreciation for the food you eat.

Below you will find our “Egg Layer of the Month”. Please feel free to share with your family/kids. If your kids have any questions, or specific hens they would like to know more about, please feel free to email us and we will be happy to help!

Egg layer of the Month: Alice

Breed: Splash Silkie

This month we are picking a hen that is a farm favorite!

About Alice:

Alice is a splash silkie, which is one of our favorite looking chickens. For those unfamiliar, Splash Silkies are the cloud-like chickens that look less like birds and more like someone glued googly eyes onto a fancy pom-pom. Their feathers resemble a watercolor painting that got sneezed on—soft splashes of gray, white, and occasional “did I spill ink on this?” vibes.

Don’t let her cotton ball with a beak appearance fool you, because she can have an attitude!

For an example, last month she decided to go on strike and go broody, which in short means she becomes very lazy and sits on eggs until they hatch. While she is broody, she will demand her food be brought to her and be taken outside each day for no more than five minutes each day to see what has been happening in the world while she has been gone.

Even though Alice has her moments, she can be very sweet. Each morning it is a joy to see her mini sized egg in her coop!
