We think it is important to know where your food comes from. In an effort to allow our customers to connect with their food, every month we will be featuring one of our hens for you to meet. We hope by allowing you, and your family, to get to know our animals, it will help spark interest and appreciation for the food you eat.
Below you will find our “Egg Layer of the Month”. Please feel free to share with your family/kids. If your kids have any questions, or specific hens they would like to know more about, please feel free to email us and we will be happy to help!
Egg layer of the Month: Pickles
Breed: Buff Bearded Polish
This month we are picking a hen that is an infrequent egg-layer, because almost everyone is in January!
Why?
Chickens are photoperiod. Meaning they require light in order to lay eggs. While this can be artifically created through lighting their coops, we choose to have their cycles regulated by the sun. This equates to less eye production during the months when the days are shorter.
Lucky for us, winter solstice has occurred, and the days are getting longer! That means more eggs are being produced around the farm.
Pickles is still a little young, but I’m sure she will join her “sisters” in laying eggs regularly soon. And even if she doesn’t, we still love her!
